Under the Thicket is a hauntingly beautiful 3d indie short by Caleb Worcester.
Set in a quiet rural diner, the story begins with the Grim Reaper and a ghost sharing a meal. The ghost, it seems, has been sent on a mysterious mission. As it drifts through a vibrant autumn forest, carrying a tote bag, the ghost encounters a black cat, and a brief, meaningful bond forms between them. Their connection is short-lived, however, as the ghost soon reaches the surprising end of its journey.
The film’s narrative appears to be intentionally open-ended, leaving viewers to ponder: Is the ghost visiting its own grave? Has it just died? The story’s ambiguity only deepens its tranquil, reflective tone, suggesting that, like life itself, perhaps it’s best not to overthink it but to savor each moment.
Created entirely in Blender, Under the Thicket is a visually stunning and reflective exploration of nature and the transience of life. The film is accompanied by a moving score performed by the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, enhancing its emotional depth.
Worcester is a Kansas City-based illustrator and animator. His clients have included The Washington Post, Veritasium, and Blue Origin. Under the Thicket was independently produced and premiered in September at the Kansas City Underground Film Festival.
